Supplementary weaving is a decorative technique in which additional threads are woven into a textile to create an ornamental pattern in addition to the ground pattern. The supplementary weave can be of the warp or of the weft. Supplementary weave is commonly used in many of thetextiles of Southeast Asia such as in Balinese textiles, the textiles of Sumba and the songket of Sumatra, Malaysia. Bring all the design possibilities of supplemental warps to your own loom. Join weaving expert Deb Essen for + minutes of watch-and-learn lessons to take your cloth into the third dimension with piqué, Bedford cord, and pile weaves.
Then you will learn the optimum techniques for setting up and weaving on an inkle loom, including yarn and tool preparation. You will quickly learn how to weave supplementary warp-patterning as Jacquetta shares her years of expertise with you. By hand manipulating warp yarns, you can have a great time with color and create unusual, intricate. Here is the threading diagram for 13 pattern threads using a standard heddle. Remember that the pattern threads should be at least twice as thick as the pattern threads. Ideally, wool should be used. It makes a clearer pattern on the surface. The pattern threads are numbered and in red. I used this pattern draft which comes from a Leksand band.

Weaving at Ock Pop Tok, Luang Prabang, - demonstration of the vertical heddle storage system. Supplementary Warp Patterning is for experienced weavers who understand supplementary weft structures and basic block theory, and who can warp a loom independently. Its user-friendly approach is intended to acquaint you with turned drafts, more free-form warp patterned designs, and the three methods of warping a loom with more than one warp.
Supplemental warp is a warp end that is in addition/supplement to a ground fabric. If the supplemental warp ends were cut out a viable fabric would be left, plain weave in this case. If you're familiar with overshot you can think of that as a supplemental weft - the pattern threads in overshot are in supplement to the plain weave weft ground.

Tension held nice and even throughout weaving 🙂 However the weaving didn’t go well. The first few centimetres looked streaky, obscuring the patterning. Weeks passed, some pleasant (Forum in Orange), some less so (virus in tummy). Click to read more about Supplementary Warp Patterning - Shuttle Craft Monograph 17 by Harriet Tidball.

Summer Winter threading alternating thick/thin yarn with one tie down followed by one pattern thread using 20/2 (8, yd/lb) ground and 10/2 (4, yd/lb) supplementary warp.
For 20/2, I get 32 epi; and 10/2, 24 I can’t seem to figure is how to reconcile the 2 different epi to get a final sett.Supplementary warp, or supplemental warp is a technique that opens a world of fabulous design possibilities. It allows the weaver to plan complex patterns that can be woven with only one shuttle.
This workshop is a “round robin” style workshop where students bring pre-warped looms and weave samples on the other looms at the workshop as well.Did you think an inkle loom was a children's toy for making striped belts?
